The Quick Guide

  • Find or buy a favorite piece of fabric that means something to you or reminds you of Mumford and Sons
  • Cut it into an 8″ x 8″ (8 inches by 8 inches) or 20 cm x 20 cm (20 centimeters by 20 centimeters) square
  • Write, stitch, or embroider your name and location and/or message on the fabric while avoiding the outer 1/2″ inch (1 cm) border (optional, please read the note below if you want to write on the fabric)
  • Include a brief written message about your fabric and something to the band (optional)
  • Mail it to: no longer open

Deadline: Please try and get your fabric to me in the mail by September 15th. The earlier, the better, but I will take in submissions for as long as I can. The actual quilt will have to start to be sewn together by mid-September.

The Explanation and Long Winded Guide

Hello, my darlings!

As you may know, if you follow our social accounts at all, I love giving the boys gifts when I see them. What do I love even more than that? Giving them gifts from you!

In April I was briefly able to collect messages from about 100 of you to pass along to the band. It was awesome and it felt great and they loved it but I do a lot of things last minute so I gave you all basically a day to read the announcement and send in a message, so I know a ton of you missed the deadline or even the announcement altogether.

So, as I am learning to adult better, I am now planning things ahead of time. I will be seeing Mumford in October, in 3 months. After some brainstorming and bouncing ideas off of others, I’ve decided to make a Mumfamily Quilt (the name may need some work). I’m asking that you all mail me an 8″ x 8″ (eight inches by eight inches) piece of fabric. This would be roughly 20 cm x 20 cm (twenty centimeters by twenty centimeters) for everyone else on the metric system.

While the preferred material is cotton, I will take any piece of fabric you want to send. This can be a piece of a blanket, t-shirt, curtain, pillow, literally… any fabric. You could even go to a craft store and look around for something that reminds you of them. Whatever your heart desires. It should just be a piece of you that you want to give to them.

You can do anything you want with this fabric; stitch or embroider a message or heart or whatever you’d like. You can see how to do that here (or Google a tutorial you like) and there are even tons of videos on YouTube to help. You can also write a small message on it. Maybe your name and where you are from? Just be mindful of what type of marker or pen you use as they can bleed on fabric and make the message hard or impossible to read. They do make fabric markers, too, and if you’d like to write on the fabric, I would suggest getting one or a pack of these.

half-inch-seam-allowance

The only guideline you need to follow is please don’t write or include anything in the outer 1/2″ inch (roughly 1 cm) border. This is the seam allowance and it will get stitched up and your message will get cut off. See the guide above to understand what I mean. Don’t write outside of those dashed lines on your square piece. Keep your message, writing, or embroidery toward the center.

I know this tiny space isn’t enough to tell the band much of anything. So, you can include a written note along with your piece of fabric. This is optional. If you decide to include a note please at least write where your piece of fabric came from and what it means to you or why you chose to pick that particular one. Also, I know it’s hard, but please try to be brief. A few paragraphs is fine but 3 pages is a bit too much. If everyone sent in 3 pages I would have a massive War and Peace size novel on my hands.

You should be able to fit this into a standard envelope with one stamp so it should cost under $1 for our US fans and hopefully around $1-$2 for our international ones. If you really want to mail something into us and you don’t have the money to do so, please contact me, and I’ll see what I can do to help.
